The Art of Skiing

Through Rad Smith’s goggles, skiing is more thoughtful than thrilling. An accomplished backcountry and Nordic skier, Smith is also a professional mapmaker, and he says that while he’s skiing he’s taking in “how the landscape changes in snow, seeing how shadows fall, and looking at hill shadings.”
The Montana-based Smith’s specialty is illustrated maps of ski resorts. While he has a back- ground in digital mapmaking, he now works with old-school paints to conjure 30-by-40- inch master canvases, which are then reproduced online and in print. His latest work is a map of Colorado’s Keystone Resort that includes Bergman Bowl, an area that will introduce a new ski lift this season.
